Business Architecture

Business Architecture (BA) is the foundation of Enterprise Architecture. It provides business context and guidance to keep the enterprise architecture focused on the strategies and goals of the enterprise. Following activities include in a BA initiative:

  • Validate and document business strategy and plan
    • business goals & objectives
    • business drivers
    • business strategties and matrices for success
  • Identify and describe business issues & pain points, capabilities, product and services
  • Identify and document Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for the business objectives
  • Develop a business architecture framework- a blueprint
  • Perform Stakeholder analysis and identify stakeholder's stakes in the business component and their roles
  • Perform business domain modeling to identify, define, describe and document value streams and business processes
  • Develop views corresponding to stakeholder's viewpoint to address their concern, following models are developed to address the stakeholder's concern:
    • business process models (BPM)
    • information exchange models
    • use case models
    • information class models
    • business rules models and
    • event models etc
  • Develop as-is and to-be (target) state of the business architecture
  • Develop several matrices to perform certain analysis
  • Identify new building blocks, eliminate old building blocks, identify gaps and classify as those that should be developed
  • Create a business architecture report
