Overview of Enterprise Architecture (EA)

"Enterprise architecture" is the design that determines how information technology (IT) supports the business of the enterprise. A metaphor for enterprise architecture is city planning. Just like a city fulfills several functions : government, emergency response, transportation of goods, trash removal and disposal, and energy delivery services, an enterprise architecture ensures an effectively planned Information Technology infrastructure to support the business goals and objectives of the enterprise.

The "city plan" specifies building codes, building permits, prescribed land use, and specifies road patters to support the city's business functions. The enterprise architecture provides a set of blueprints, standards, guidelines, process maps, technology pattern, information architecture, a target future state application landscape map, specification for shared infrastructure services to support the enterprise's business functions.
